What makes an easy crossword easy?
Easy crosswords give you a way into the grid: a clue you recognize, an answer you can spell, and a crossing letter that helps with the next word. Here you can play free online or download printable puzzles without an account. If you're new to crosswords, or returning after a long break, start with the answers you know and let them help with the rest.
Our general puzzles aim for familiar words and direct clues. In the example below, “Frog's evening call” leads to CROAK. You don't need to decode a cryptic clue first. Difficulty is personal, though: a subject you enjoy may feel easier than a smaller puzzle about something unfamiliar.
All 19 white squares in this mini belong to both an Across and a Down answer. When one clue stops you, its crossing clues give you another route in. The black squares separate answers; you leave them empty.
How do you start an easy crossword?
You can begin with any clue, even if it isn't number one. Try 5 Across in this mini: “Frog's evening call” (5 letters). CROAK fits. Now look at 1 Down, “Squirrel's buried winter snack” (5 letters). Its third square already contains O, giving you the pattern _ _ O _ _. ACORN fits both the clue and that letter.
1. Start with CROAK
5 Across: Frog's evening call (5)
2. Build on its O
1 Down: Squirrel's buried winter snack (5)
On the mini player, select a clue or square and type one letter per square. Tap the same square again, or press space, to change direction. If an answer won't fit, check its length and the letters it crosses before replacing it. You can leave a tricky clue and come back with more letters.
Check marks incorrect letters you've entered without filling the blanks. Reveal shows the whole solution, so use it when you're ready to see how the grid works; a revealed mini doesn't add to your solved count. Your next puzzle gives you another chance to practice.
Which easy crossword should you choose?
Pick the kind of help or routine you want. A small grid keeps the first attempt manageable; a supplied word list changes the task from recalling answers to finding their places. These are four useful starting points:
| If you want… | Start here | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| A short first solve | Mini Crosswords | A 5×5 grid with Across and Down clues for every white square. |
| A daily puzzle routine | Daily Crossword | A larger grid to return to each day; start with the clues you recognize. |
| The answers supplied | Fill-In Crosswords | A word list and a placed starter word. Work out where the remaining words fit. |
| Pencil and paper | Printable Crosswords | PDF packs with optional answer keys and large print. |
The mini size is shown above. For the full range of dimensions and answer counts, see the crossword size guide.
If you're saving puzzles for a journey or a quiet afternoon away from a screen, start with the printable pack builder. Choose a small size and include the answer key so you can check your work afterward. The printable guide explains the paper layouts and large-print options.
Easy crosswords for adults and families
An easy puzzle can be a satisfying break for an adult, whether it's your first crossword or you simply want a gentler solve today. Our general minis and daily puzzles are starting points for grown-up solvers, too. If a favorite subject helps you think of answers, browse themed crosswords for something that interests you.
For a young reader, kids crosswords use a separate children's word-and-clue list, with size guidance on that page. Picture crosswords replace written clues with images. To solve together, one person can read or name the clue while the other counts the squares and writes the answer. Swap roles for the next clue.
How are our puzzles made?
Our approach combines curated word lists, clues written with AI assistance and human review, and computer-built grids. The software fits answers together so their crossing letters agree. We don't individually hand-solve every newly generated grid before you play it. A clue can still miss the mark, and a word that's familiar to one person can be new to another.
Read how we make our puzzles for the construction and freshness details. If you find an unclear clue or an answer that doesn't seem right, tell us the word and puzzle type so we can review the source list.
