The puzzle made of its own subject
Here's something no other theme on this site can claim: a crossword is already a geometry lesson before you write a single letter. The grid is a set of congruent SQUARES arranged in ROWS and a COLUMN or nine; the black squares are placed with rotational SYMMETRY (spin the grid a half TURN and the pattern lands on itself); every answer is a line SEGMENT of letter cells that crosses another at a RIGHT angle. So when you solve a geometry crossword, the answers describe the very grid they're sitting in. Write VERTEX into a corner and it's hard not to feel the puzzle winking at you. It's the most self-referential fun we've ever fit onto one page — a puzzle that is, quite literally, made of its own topic.
The word list behind it covers the whole subject the way a good math wall does: flat shapes (OVAL, RHOMBUS, OCTAGON, ELLIPSE), solid ones (SPHERE, PRISM, CONE, CUBOID), their parts (SIDE, EDGE, FACE, APEX, RADIUS), the family of angles (ACUTE, RIGHT, OBTUSE, REFLEX), the moves that shift shapes around (FLIP, ROTATE, REFLECT, ENLARGE), and the measuring words that pin it all down (AREA, WIDTH, DEGREE, VOLUME). Plus the toolbox, of course — RULER, COMPASS, STENCIL, and the trusty ERASER for when a plan goes crooked.
Math words are a second language — this is the phrasebook
Ask any teacher where students stumble in geometry and the honest answer is usually not the ideas — kids understand corners and turns perfectly well — it's the names. VERTEX, OBTUSE, TANGENT, SECTOR: geometry vocabulary is practically a foreign language, and like any language it sticks through friendly repetition, not flashcard drills. A crossword is sneakily perfect for this. The clue asks for the definition in plain words ("math word for a corner point"), your pencil produces the term, and the crossing answers check your spelling letter by letter as you go. It's a worksheet that marks itself — and because our puzzles are generated fresh every time, nobody can pass last week's answers around the class.
We've kept a deliberate mix: proper math terms for the vocabulary practice, and everyday shape words — KITE, DOME, WEDGE, LOOP — so a puzzle never turns into a test. A ten-year-old meets words they know beside words they're learning, which is exactly the company new vocabulary likes to keep.
Geometry is the subject you can trip over
No other branch of school math is this visible on an ordinary street. The stop sign at the corner is an OCTAGON; the manhole cover is a CIRCLE (the only shape that can't fall through its own hole); every WHEEL is telling you about a HUB, its SPOKES, and a RIM. Breakfast serves a WAFFLE with a perfect GRID on it, bees build HEXAGON apartments, a FUNNEL is a CONE with the tip snipped off, and a slice of PIZZA is a SECTOR whether it wants to be or not. Our clues lean into this on purpose — you'll be asked about doorstops and soft-serve SWIRLS as often as about degrees — because spotting shapes in the wild is the actual skill, and the puzzle is just an excuse to practice it.
Where are the TRIANGLE and the RECTANGLE?
Confession time: geometry's two most famous shapes are missing from the grids, and for a delightfully geometric reason — they don't fit. Our themed grids run up to seven letters, and TRIANGLE is eight, RECTANGLE nine. The same length limit stops DIAMETER, PERIMETER, PARALLEL, VERTICAL, DIAGONAL, CYLINDER, the PROTRACTOR — and, yes, the word GEOMETRY itself. But none of them went to waste: they all star in the clues instead. RADIUS is clued as half a DIAMETER, the FENCE runs along a yard's PERIMETER, a LADDER shows off its PARALLEL rungs, and a COLUMN is "a row's VERTICAL cousin." The big words hold the lantern; the short ones do the interlocking. THREE, meanwhile, is clued as "sides on the simplest polygon" — the triangle sneaks in through arithmetic.
Why the grid looks a little different
Solvers with a compass for an eye will notice our geometry grids weave more openly than a newspaper puzzle — not every letter sits at a crossing. That's the honest trade of a fully-themed crossword. A dense grid where every letter works in two directions needs a vocabulary of thousands, and one school subject — even one with this many nameable parts — supplies only so many five-letter words. Rather than pad the puzzle with off-topic filler (the usual trick, and we call it a cheat), we use an airy, waffle-style weave so every answer can stay on subject. You still get real crossings to lean on: a half-remembered RHOMBUS is rescued by the words running through it.
Geometry crossword or maths crossword?
Easy to mix up, fun to tell apart. Our maths crosswords and multiplication crosswords are cross-number puzzles: the answers are digits, and the clues are sums to work out. This page is a true word crossword that happens to be about math — you spell VERTEX; you don't calculate it. If you want arithmetic practice, take the number grids; if you want the vocabulary of shapes (or you just like knowing that a stop sign has a name), you're already in the right place. Common questions
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a compass-click of a puzzle — six answers, over before your protractor warms up. The 7×7 fits 10–16 answers with room for the long words: HEXAGON, COMPASS, PYRAMID. The 9×9 is the full construction, around twenty answers for a proper sit-down solve. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own puzzle history, so switching never costs you anything.
Do I need to be good at math to solve these?
Not even slightly. There's nothing to calculate — every clue is a friendly description in plain words, and at least half the answers are everyday shapes you've known since the sandbox: STAR, RING, BALL, ARCH. The technical terms that do appear are clued so gently that the puzzle teaches them to you on the way through.
What grade level is the vocabulary?
Roughly elementary through middle school — the span where shape names, angle types, and measuring words are taught. Young solvers might meet VERTEX or TANGENT for the first time here (the crossings will carry them); adults get the quiet pleasure of discovering they still know what a REFLEX angle is.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers every geometry puzzle you've played here, and the engine refuses to repeat one. Individual words will return across puzzles (a subject only has so many terms), usually wearing a different clue.
