What makes these animal crosswords?
Plenty of puzzles slap a lion on the cover and call it an animal crossword. Ours are themed all the way through: every single answer comes from a hand-picked word list of creatures and creature-things. That means the animals themselves — TIGER, LLAMA, WREN, GECKO — but also the whole world around them: the sounds they make (MEOW, NEIGH, CLUCK), the homes they keep (NEST, HIVE, DEN), their babies (CUB, JOEY, FAWN), and the bits they're famous for (TUSK, MANE, PAW). If an answer wouldn't earn its place in a nature documentary, it doesn't get in.
We're equally picky in the other direction: no obscure species dredged up to make a grid work. You won't be asked for a four-letter Malaysian civet here. Everyday animals, friendly clues — that's the deal on every page of this site.
Why animals make the perfect crossword topic
Ask a teacher what vocabulary children learn first and love most, and animals win by a mile — kids who can't yet spell "necessary" will happily spell STEGOSAURUS. Animal words are concrete (you can picture a HIPPO; good luck picturing "ambience"), they come with sounds and stories attached, and they're one of the few vocabularies that a five-year-old and a grandparent know equally well. That makes an animal crossword the rare puzzle a whole family can genuinely solve together, with everyone contributing.
For grown-up solvers, the theme works differently: it narrows the hunt. "Four letters, pond quacker" barely counts as a question — and that little rush of instant knowing is exactly what makes themed puzzles so moreish.
Why the grid looks a little different
Sharp-eyed solvers will notice our animal grids have a looser weave than a newspaper crossword — not every letter sits at a crossing. That's deliberate, and it's the honest trade of a fully-themed puzzle. A dense grid where every letter crosses two words needs a vocabulary of thousands to choose from; the animal kingdom, generous as it is, only supplies so many five-letter words. Rather than pad the grid with off-topic filler (the usual trick, and we think a cheat), we use an open, waffle-style weave where every answer can stay on theme. You still get real crossings to help you — a stuck LLAMA is still rescued by the words running through it.

These puzzles are built for exactly the use you have in mind: early readers sounding out CLAW, classroom fast-finishers earning a puzzle, rainy-Saturday kitchen-table solving. The crossing letters act as built-in hints, so children get confirmation rather than frustration, and every word is one worth knowing. Common questions
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a two-minute treat with six animal answers. The 7×7 packs in a bigger menagerie (10–16 answers) with room for the long beasts — GIRAFFE, PENGUIN, CHEETAH. The 9×9 is the full safari: around 20 answers for a proper sit-down solve. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own history — switching won't cost you puzzles.
What age are these puzzles good for?
Confident readers of about 7+ can solve them independently; younger animal fans do brilliantly with a grown-up on clue duty. There's no upper limit — the clues are easy, but the joy of a good MOO is universal.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers every puzzle you've played here and the engine refuses to repeat one. Individual words will reappear across puzzles (the animal kingdom is big, but not infinite), usually wearing a different clue.
