Where's STEGOSAURUS? (An honest answer)
Here's the funny thing about dinosaur names: the famous ones are enormous — fittingly. TYRANNOSAURUS runs thirteen letters, TRICERATOPS eleven, STEGOSAURUS eleven again. Our easy grids use answers of three to seven letters, so the giant names literally don't fit through the door. Rather than fake it, we do what dinosaur fans actually do: T. rex becomes REX, triceratops becomes TRIKE, velociraptor becomes RAPTOR. The long names still show up where they belong — in the clues, doing what they've always done best: making you sound impressively scientific at the dinner table.
The upside is a richer puzzle. Freed from squeezing in genus names, the grid fills with the dinosaur world: what they ate, how they moved (PLOD, STOMP, LUMBER, PROWL), what became of them (a certain METEOR gets a mention), and how we know any of this at all.
The crossword that's secretly a science lesson
We couldn't resist tucking real paleontology into the clues. Solve a few puzzles and you'll pick up genuinely good facts: that a T. rex shed and regrew its teeth for its whole life, that sauropods swallowed a PEBBLE or two to grind their greens, that a stegosaurus ran its whole back end on a walnut-sized BRAIN, that hips are how scientists sort the dinosaur family tree, and that BIRDS — look out the window — are the dinosaurs that never left. If a clue makes you say "wait, really?", the answer is yes, really. We check.

Why the grid has open squares
You'll notice not every letter sits at a crossing, the way it would in a newspaper puzzle. That's the honest cost of staying on-topic: a fully interlocked grid needs thousands of candidate words, and even the mighty Mesozoic only supplies so many. We'd rather give you an open, waffle-style weave where every single answer belongs than pad the grid with off-topic filler. A stuck RAPTOR still gets rescued by the words running through it — that's the crossword promise, and it holds.

You know who you are. You've read the same dinosaur encyclopedia aloud four hundred times; you've been corrected, at breakfast, on your pronunciation of a Cretaceous genus. Which size should I start with?
The 5×5 is a quick snack — six answers, two minutes, ideal for young solvers. The 7×7 brings in the longer words (RAPTORS, VOLCANO, EXTINCT) for a fuller bite. The 9×9 is the full expedition: around twenty answers for a proper sit-down solve. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own puzzle history, so switching costs you nothing.
Are the puzzles scientifically accurate?
As accurate as a friendly clue can be. Where science is still arguing — what color they were, exactly why they vanished — our clues say so honestly (one answer is literally GUESS). And yes, we know birds are technically dinosaurs. Several clues make sure you know it too.
Will I ever see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers every puzzle you've played here, and the engine refuses to repeat one. Individual words do return across puzzles (there was only one Mesozoic), usually wearing a fresh clue.
