Here's something weather does better than almost any other topic: tiny, exact adjectives. English keeps a whole drawer of them — a morning can be CRISP, BRISK, NIPPY, or BLEAK; an afternoon MUGGY, BALMY, HAZY, or GUSTY — and each one tells you precisely what to wear. Crosswords are a lovely way to sort that drawer out, because the crossing letters make you commit: is that sticky August air MUGGY or HUMID? (Trick question — you'll meet both.)

Where's BLIZZARD? (and why the grid looks a little different)
Sharp-eyed solvers will notice some famous weather is missing from the grid. That's not an oversight — it's arithmetic. Our puzzles use answers of three to seven letters, and the weather's biggest celebrities are all long-winded: BLIZZARD and FORECAST run eight letters, HURRICANE and LIGHTNING nine, and THERMOMETER wouldn't fit on the page sideways. So they star in the clues instead: TYPHOON is "Pacific cousin of the hurricane," BOLT is the zigzag the lightning throws, and the blizzard sends its FLURRY, its DRIFTS, and a good WINTRY mix to solve in its place.
You'll also spot that our grids have a looser, waffle-style weave than a newspaper crossword — not every letter sits at a crossing. That's an honest trade: a fully dense grid needs thousands of words to draw on, and we'd rather keep every answer genuinely about the sky than pad the corners with off-topic filler. The crossings that remain are real, and they'll rescue you when ZEPHYR refuses to blow in on its own.
Four seasons in one sitting
Because the list spans the whole calendar, each puzzle is a little year in miniature. One grid might SWELTER through a DROUGHT while the next slides from SLUSH into a proper FREEZE; you can be planting SEEDS at one across and shoveling the driveway at four down.
