"Nature" is the biggest theme we make, because it's the whole world minus the buildings. One clue has you at the seashore counting TIDES, the next in a pine FOREST listening for an OWL, the next watching a THUNDER-storm roll across the PRAIRIE. Our word list was gathered the way a good field guide is: landscapes (CANYON, GLADE, RAVINE), water in all its moods (BROOK, GEYSER, GLACIER), weather and sky (MONSOON, RAINBOW, HORIZON), growing things (SAPLING, FROND, NECTAR), the creatures that live among them, and the rocks underneath it all (GEODE, GRANITE, FLINT). If you couldn't meet it on a long walk somewhere on Earth, it didn't make the list.
That breadth is what makes a nature crossword feel different from our other themes. A dog puzzle is a happy visit to one subject; a nature puzzle is a ramble — each grid wanders somewhere new, and a single 9×9 might cross a DESERT, a SWAMP, and a TREETOP before you're done.
The vocabulary of noticing
Here's the quiet magic of nature words: learning one changes what you see. A walk contains more once you know that the sunny gap in the trees is a GLADE, that the fern's feathery arm is a FROND, that the fan of mud where the river meets the sea is a DELTA. Naturalists have always known this — you notice what you can name. Crosswords turn out to be a sneaky-good way to collect those names, because the crossing letters make you dredge up words you half-know (is that peaty bog fuel… PEAT?) and cement them in the best possible way: by earning them.
We lean into that. Our clues are written to teach a little while they tease — "Fossilized tree sap, prized as a gem" tells you something true about AMBER even if you already had the crossing letters. Why the grid looks a little different
Look closely and you'll see our nature grids have a looser, waffle-style weave than a newspaper crossword — not every letter sits at a crossing. That's a deliberate, honest trade. A fully dense grid needs a vocabulary of thousands to draw on, and the moment a themed word list runs short, most publishers quietly pad the grid with off-topic filler. We'd rather keep every answer genuinely outdoors and open up the weave instead. You still get real crossings to rescue you — a stubborn GORGE is still bridged by the words running through it.

Nature vocabulary is school vocabulary: habitats and seasons, the water cycle (VAPOR, CLOUD, RAIN, RIVER — it's all in here), landforms, weather. The 5×5 is a quick breath of fresh air — six answers, a couple of minutes. The 7×7 has room for the seven-letter scenery: GLACIER, VOLCANO, RAINBOW. The 9×9 is the full day-hike, around 20 answers deep. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own puzzle history, so switching never costs you a fresh grid.
Is this an animal crossword?
There's wildlife in here — you can't do nature without the HERON and the FOX — but animals share the stage with weather, plants, landscapes, and rocks.
