Every answer straight from a cat's world
A proper cat crossword shouldn't just have a cat in the corner of the page — it should be cats from the first clue to the last. Ours are: the cats themselves (TABBY, SIAMESE, PERSIAN, a swaggering TOMCAT), the sounds they make (MEW, TRILL, HISS, and of course PURR), the things they do (KNEAD, POUNCE, SNOOZE, IGNORE), and the territory they rule — the SILL, the SUNBEAM, the fresh LAUNDRY, the exact sheet of PAPER you were reading. The wild cousins get their visits too, from the BOBCAT to the JAGUAR.
What you won't find is padding. No obscure species hauled in to make a corner work, no words a cat lover wouldn't recognize. If it wouldn't come up while telling a story about your cat, it didn't make the list.
One topic, two vocabularies
Here's what makes cats such a joy to write puzzles about: they've collected two whole vocabularies. There's the old one, centuries deep — a mother cat is a QUEEN to breeders, a working cat is a MOUSER, a male is a TOM, and a kitten fresh from the LITTER is a KIT. And then there's the brand-new one the internet wrote — the ZOOMIES at 3 a.m., the LOAF pose with paws tucked in, toe BEANS, "making biscuits." A grandparent and a teenager can solve these puzzles together and each explain words to the other, which we think is about the nicest thing a crossword can do.
The cat sat on the crossword
Cat people already know the ancient rule: whatever you're reading is where the cat needs to sit. Newspaper crosswords never stood a chance. Ours live on your screen, which is only a partial fix — we can't stop anyone walking across the keyboard — but at least the puzzle survives, your progress stays put, and there's a fresh grid waiting whenever you manage to reclaim the device. Consider it a crossword built for solving one-handed, because the other hand is obviously busy providing chin scratches.
A word about the grid — and a few famous names
Two honest notes. First, the weave: our themed grids are a little more open than a newspaper puzzle's, because a fully on-topic word list only contains so many five-letter words. Rather than smuggle in off-topic filler to force a dense grid, we use a waffle-style layout where every answer stays feline and the crossings still rescue you when you're stuck. Second, names: we keep our clues to everyday words, but cats have a few names so universal we'd be silly to leave them out — the SPHINX gazing across EGYPT (where cats were genuinely worshipped), PUSS in Boots, the Russian BLUE. If a name needs explaining at a family dinner table, it stays out.
For kids, classrooms, and nap-adjacent solving
Cat words are wonderful first crossword words: short, concrete, and attached to strong feelings — every child can picture a PAW, a YAWN, a bowl of MILK. The crossing letters work as built-in hints, so early readers get confirmation instead of frustration. Common questions
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a quick scratch behind the ears — six answers, a couple of minutes. The 7×7 fits a bigger clowder, with room for the long words: WHISKER, ZOOMIES, SIAMESE. The 9×9 is the full sprawl, around twenty answers, best enjoyed the way cats enjoy anything — unhurried. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own puzzle history.
Do I need to know fancy breeds?
No. The breeds that appear are household names — SIAMESE, PERSIAN, MANX, BENGAL, RAGDOLL — plus the famous coats, like TABBY, CALICO, and TUXEDO, that every cat lover knows on sight. If a breed only comes up at championship cat shows, it doesn't come up here.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers what you've solved and the engine refuses repeats. Individual words will return in new grids wearing different clues, which seems fitting: cats also come back whenever they please.
