Chemistry has a reputation problem: say the word and people picture white coats, safety-sealed doors, and equations with too many subscripts. But chemistry is simply the science of stuff — and you have been up to your elbows in it since breakfast. The FIZZ in your soda, the RUST creeping up the garden gate, the GLUE on the envelope, the reason HONEY in the back of the pantry never spoils — all chemistry, all in these puzzles. Our word list covers the whole cheerful sweep of it: the elements and their famous symbols, the lab bench (FLASK, BEAKER, TONGS, GOGGLES), the states of matter from SOLID to PLASMA, and the everyday reactions happening in your kitchen, your bathroom cabinet, and your bike's slowly corroding chain.
Crossword makers have always loved the elements
Here's a trade secret: the periodic table has been quietly propping up crosswords for a century. Element names are short, vowel-friendly, and end in obliging letters — which is why NEON, IRON, and ARGON turn up in newspaper grids far more often than their place in daily conversation would justify. Most puzzles use them as filler and hope you don't ask questions. We do the opposite: here the elements are the stars, clued as themselves. You'll meet GOLD that never rusts, ZINC keeping nails shiny, HELIUM squeaking up your voice, SODIUM fizzing dramatically in water, and KRYPTON — a perfectly real noble gas that would like a word with the comic books. Solve here for a week and you'll know your way around the element chart better than you ever did in school, one friendly clue at a time (Sn for TIN really does make sense — eventually).
The kitchen is the lab you already own
Every classic science-fair moment is hiding in these grids. The baking-soda volcano is just an ACID meeting a BASE with theatrical results. Cheese-making is CURDS parting ways with WHEY. Bread rises because YEAST is a tireless little chemist, caramel is SUGAR pushed past its comfort zone, and the crust on a well-toasted marshmallow is chemistry you're allowed to eat. We lean into this on purpose: the clues double as a tour of the science humming away in an ordinary house, so solving one of these with a curious kid tends to end with someone raiding the pantry for an experiment. We consider that a feature, not a spill hazard.
Where is HYDROGEN?
Honesty corner: our friendly grids top out at seven letters, and chemistry — a science that named something "phenolphthalein" without blushing — runs long. HYDROGEN (8), NITROGEN (8), CHLORINE (8), ELECTRON (8), MOLECULE (8), SOLUTION (8), CATALYST (8), and CHEMISTRY itself (9) all miss the boxes by a letter or more. There's something delicious about the lightest element in the universe being too heavy for the grid, and we let the irony do half the work: the big names run the show from the clue side instead, where length costs nothing. Hydrogen introduces WATER, electrons buzz through every clue about IONS and BONDS, and molecules chaperone the POLYMER family. Top billing, just above the grid instead of in it.
Chemistry, kept cozy
Real chemistry sets have skull-and-crossbones labels; ours doesn't. The word list stays firmly on the sunny side of the subject — the scariest thing in any of these puzzles is SULFUR's rotten-egg reputation, and the only explosion is the strictly educational kind involving a papier-mâché volcano. Anything grim, toxic, or likely to feature in a crime novel stayed out, because these puzzles are built for the family table, and the family table has standards. The one lab rule we do enforce: SAFETY goggles are always clued with respect. Rule one is rule one.
A note on famous names
Most of our themed word lists keep proper names out entirely, and chemistry needs only the gentlest exception: a handful of names that long ago became part of the furniture. Marie CURIE, who won the NOBEL Prize twice and discovered RADIUM; the BUNSEN burner hissing on every school bench; the KELVIN scale that starts where cold itself gives up; and EUREKA, the most famous thing anyone has ever shouted in a bathtub. Every one passes our dinner-table bar — if the name wouldn't ring a bell over dessert, it isn't in the grid — and the clue always carries you, so you're never quizzed on a stranger.
Chemistry, science, biology, or physics — which am I playing?
We now have four lab coats hanging on the rack, so here's the tour. The science crosswords are the grand survey — magnets, volcanoes, planets, the whole curriculum in one word list. The biology crosswords take everything alive, from the CELL to the meadow, and the physics crosswords take everything that moves, falls, or hums. This page is for what everything is made of: if it bubbles, rusts, dissolves, glows, or sits proudly on the periodic table, it's here. Rule of thumb — if it wriggles it's biology, if it swings it's physics, and if it fizzes when you pour vinegar on it, you've found the right page.
Why the grid looks a little different
Our chemistry grids use a looser, waffle-style weave than a newspaper crossword — not every letter sits at the crossing of two words. That's the honest trade of a fully-themed puzzle: a densely-interlocked grid needs many thousands of words to choose from, and one well-kept topic supplies fewer at each length. Rather than pad the grid with off-topic filler (the usual trick, and we think a cheat), we keep every answer inside the subject and open the weave instead. You still get real crossing letters to rescue you — a half-remembered ISOTOPE is saved by the words reacting through it.
For classrooms, homeschoolers, and science fairs
Chemistry is a vocabulary subject wearing safety goggles — before a student can balance an equation, they need ELEMENT, MIXTURE, DILUTE, and DENSITY to feel like old friends, and a crossword drills exactly that with the crossing letters acting as built-in hints. Common questions
Do I need to know chemistry to play?
You need to have heard of it, which is a far lower bar — and if you've ever watched a nail rust or shaken a soda bottle you shouldn't have, you have. The clues always describe what they want ("balloon gas lighter than air", "sour compound that turns litmus red"), so the science teaches itself as you solve. Plenty of solvers tell us a crossword is where vocabulary finally sticks; chemistry is no exception.
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a two-minute reaction with six answers. The 7×7 is a proper experiment (10–16 answers) with room for the seven-letter showpieces — MERCURY, ISOTOPE, ALCHEMY. The 9×9 is the full lab session: around twenty answers per sitting, from the elements to the equipment shelf. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own history, so switching never costs you puzzles.
Are all the elements in the puzzles?
The famous ones that fit, yes — from TIN (the shortest that qualifies) through GOLD, NEON, and IRON up to seven-letter citizens like LITHIUM, MERCURY, and URANIUM. Elements with names longer than seven letters star in clues instead, and the genuinely obscure ones (looking at you, praseodymium) stay out entirely — this is an easy crossword, and "easy" and "ytterbium" don't share a grid.
Is this safe for kids?
Completely — see "Chemistry, kept cozy" above. Nothing dangerous, nothing grim, no chemicals your grandmother wouldn't keep under the sink. Confident readers of about 8+ solve these independently; younger scientists do brilliantly with a grown-up on clue duty, and the clues hand out kitchen-experiment ideas as you go.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers every puzzle you've played here and the engine refuses to repeat one. Individual words will reappear across puzzles (there's only one OXYGEN, and everything depends on it), usually wearing a different clue the second time.
