Physics gets billed as the hard one — the science of blackboards, Greek letters, and professors with untamed hair. But strip the costume off and physics is just the study of why things move, fall, glow, and hum — and you've been running experiments since you woke up. The kettle's WHISTLE is a pressure lesson, the toast's warmth is HEAT on the move, the fridge MAGNET is doing effortless work against gravity right now, and if you took a shortcut across the grass, congratulations: you found the path of LEAST resistance. Our word list covers the whole cheerful sweep of the subject — forces and motion, light and sound, electricity and magnetism, atoms and orbits, and the simple machines quietly running your house.
The playground is a physics lab
Here's our favorite open secret: every playground is a fully equipped physics laboratory that happens to serve juice. The SWING is a pendulum (Galileo would have queued for a turn), the SLIDE is a friction experiment you conduct with your own trousers, the SEESAW is a lever with a FULCRUM and two giggling loads, and the roundabout is a masterclass in SPIN. We lean into this on purpose. The clues in these puzzles reach for the version of physics you can point at — a ball's ARC, a skater's GLIDE, a yo-yo's climb — because that's the version that makes the vocabulary stick. Solve a few of these with a kid and the next trip to the park becomes a field trip. We consider that a feature.
The people who became units
Physics has a lovely habit no other subject can match: when it really admires someone, it turns them into a unit of measurement. Isaac NEWTON now measures force. James WATT lives on every light bulb in your house. Alessandro Volta became the VOLT, James Joule the JOULE, Heinrich Hertz the HERTZ, and Nikola TESLA got the unit of magnetic field strength (the car came later). Lord KELVIN owns the temperature scale that starts at absolute zero, and Marie CURIE — the only person in this paragraph with two Nobel Prizes — has an element, a unit, and our permanent admiration. These are the only famous names in the grid, and every one passes our dinner-table bar: if it wouldn't ring a bell over dessert, it isn't an answer. The clue always carries you, so you're never quizzed on a stranger.
Where is ELECTRON?
Honesty corner: our friendly grids top out at seven letters, and physics loves a long word. ELECTRON (8), FRICTION (8), MOMENTUM (8), PRESSURE (8), VELOCITY (8), PENDULUM (8), MAGNETISM (9), and poor EINSTEIN (8) all miss the boxes — and yes, we notice the irony of a puzzle about unstoppable forces meeting an immovable letter limit. The big names still run the show from the clue side, where length costs nothing: electrons hum through every clue about CURRENT and CHARGE, momentum shoves its way into the collision clues, and Einstein's most famous FORMULA gets clued as itself. Meanwhile we savor a small victory the chemistry page can only envy: CHEMISTRY is nine letters and can never appear in its own puzzles — PHYSICS is seven, and fits.
Physics, kept cozy
Physics has chapters we simply leave in the textbook. In these grids the only blast-off is a ROCKET on a launch PAD, the only collision is on a pool table, and the atomic corner keeps its museum voice — FISSION and the REACTOR read like the science-center exhibits they are. Nothing grim, nothing that goes boom outside a fireworks display, because these puzzles are built for the family table and the family table has standards. The most dangerous thing in the whole word list is a doorknob SHOCK in winter, and frankly we've all survived worse.
Physics, chemistry, biology — or just science?
The lab-coat rack is getting crowded, so here's the tour. The science crosswords are the grand survey — the whole curriculum in one word list. The biology crosswords take everything alive, and the chemistry crosswords cover what everything is made of. This page is for how everything behaves: the pushes and pulls, the waves and sparks, the falling apples and rising balloons. Rule of thumb — if it wriggles it's biology, if it fizzes it's chemistry, and if it swings, sinks, spins, glows, echoes, or refuses to move (that's INERTIA), you've found the right page. Why the grid looks a little different
Our physics grids use a looser, waffle-style weave than a newspaper crossword — not every letter sits at the crossing of two words. That's the honest trade of a fully-themed puzzle: a densely-interlocked grid needs many thousands of words to choose from, and one well-kept topic supplies fewer at each length. Rather than pad the grid with off-topic filler (the usual trick, and we think a cheat), we keep every answer inside the subject and open the weave instead. You still get real crossing letters to rescue you — a half-remembered FULCRUM is saved by the words balancing on it.
For classrooms, homeschoolers, and science fairs
Before a student can rearrange an equation, words like FORCE, ENERGY, CIRCUIT, and GRAVITY have to feel like old friends — and a crossword drills exactly that, with the crossing letters acting as built-in hints. Common questions
Do I need to know physics to play?
You need to have heard of it, which is a much lower bar — and if you've ever rubbed a balloon on your hair or wondered why your ears pop, you have. The clues always describe what they want ("force that keeps you grounded", "sound bouncing back"), so the vocabulary teaches itself as you solve. Plenty of solvers tell us a crossword is where a word finally sticks; physics words are no exception.
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a two-minute experiment with six answers. The 7×7 is a proper lab session (10–16 answers) with room for the seven-letter showpieces — GRAVITY, INERTIA, CIRCUIT. The 9×9 is the full lecture course: around twenty answers per sitting, from the playground to the particle zoo. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own history, so switching never costs you puzzles.
Is this safe for kids?
Completely — see "Physics, kept cozy" above. Confident readers of about 8+ solve these independently; younger scientists do brilliantly with a grown-up on clue duty, and the playground clues hand out weekend experiment ideas as you go. Is E = mc² in the puzzles?
As an answer, no — grids hold letters, not equations. But the world's most famous FORMULA stars in the clues, along with MASS and ENERGY, the two words it introduced to each other. Think of the equations as the celebrity guests: always in the show, never in the boxes.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers every puzzle you've played here and the engine refuses to repeat one. Individual words will reappear across puzzles (there's only one GRAVITY, and it's not going anywhere), usually wearing a different clue the second time.
