The one crossword the whole family plays
There's a particular kind of quiet that settles over a house on Christmas afternoon — the turkey's resting, the wrapping paper is in a heap, someone's asleep in the good chair — and it is the perfect moment for a crossword. A Christmas crossword especially, because it's the rare puzzle that grandad and the seven-year-old can crack together. He knows that a wise man's gift is MYRRH; she knows RUDOLPH has a red NOSE. Between them, the grid fills.
That shared-across-the-generations quality is the whole point of these puzzles. The vocabulary of Christmas is one almost everyone carries: you've sung the carols, hung the STOCKINGS, argued about the last mince PIE. You don't need to be a crossword buff to enjoy one built entirely from words you've known since you were small.
Five Christmases in one word list
"Christmas" isn't a single topic so much as five happy ones stacked on top of each other, and our word list draws from all of them:
- The nativity — the MANGER and the STABLE, MARY and the MAGI, the STAR, the ANGEL, the shepherds' STRAW-strewn night.
- Santa's side of things — the SLEIGH and the reindeer (DASHER, VIXEN, COMET and the rest), the ELVES, the CHIMNEY, the SACK of TOYS.
- Deep midwinter — SNOW and FROST and ICICLES, the SLED on the HILL, the SCARF and MITTENS by the door.
- The feast — the TURKEY and the GRAVY, the PUDDING set alight, the EGGNOG, the box of TOFFEE nobody admits to finishing.
- Carols and the spirit of it — PEACE and JOY and good CHEER, the CHOIR, the church BELLS, the whole warm business of GIVING.
Because the pool is so broad, no two puzzles feel alike: one grid leans religious, the next is all snowmen and sweets, a third is wall-to-wall carols. That variety is what keeps you pressing the button.
Sing along as you solve
Keep an ear open and you'll notice a lot of our clues are quietly humming. "It came ___ a midnight clear" wants UPON; "O come let us ___ him" is ADORE; "___ in Royal David's City" is ONCE. We tucked carol lines into the clues on purpose — half the fun of a Christmas puzzle is the little jolt of recognition when a half-remembered lyric hands you the answer. If you find yourself singing the rest of the verse, that's not a bug.
A word about SANTA (and other names)
Most of our puzzles steer clear of proper nouns — names date badly and lock out anyone who doesn't get the reference. Christmas is the glorious exception. SANTA, RUDOLPH, NOEL, MARY and the reindeer are the vocabulary of the season; leaving them out to satisfy a rule would make for a very strange Christmas puzzle. So we let the universally-known names in — the ones every card and carol already uses — and nothing more obscure. You won't need to know anyone's surname.
Why REINDEER isn't an answer (but stars in the clues)
Sharp-eyed solvers will spot some famous absentees. REINDEER is eight letters; MISTLETOE is nine; STOCKING and SNOWFLAKE and ORNAMENT all run past the seven-letter limit our themed grids top out at. Rather than shut them out of the party entirely, we hand them a different job: they appear in the clues instead. So DEER, SLEIGH and ANTLER make the grid while REINDEER does the pointing; SOCK is the answer while STOCKING sets it up. Nobody gets left off the guest list.
Why the grid weaves a little loosely
You may notice our Christmas grids aren't quite as tightly interlocked as a newspaper crossword — not every single letter sits at a crossing. That's the honest cost of a puzzle that stays completely in theme. A dense grid where every letter does double duty needs a vocabulary of many thousands of words to draw on; the world of Christmas, rich as it is, only offers so many five-letter words. Rather than smuggle in off-topic filler to tighten the weave (the usual trick, and one we think is cheating), we use an open, waffle-style grid so every answer can stay festive. You still get real crossings to lean on — a half-remembered TINSEL is rescued by the word crossing through it.

Common questions
Are these religious or secular Christmas puzzles?
Both, deliberately. One grid might hand you MANGER, HERALD and GOSPEL; the next is all SANTA, SLEDGE and FUDGE. We cover the whole season — nativity, Santa, snow, feast and carols — because that's how most families actually celebrate. You'll never be quizzed on doctrine; the religious answers are the ones everyone meets in a carol or on a card.
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a two-minute treat with about six festive answers — perfect while the kettle boils. The 7×7 makes room for the longer words — PUDDING, SLEIGH, CRACKER — with 10 to 16 answers. The 9×9 is the full Christmas dinner: around 20 answers for a proper sit-down solve. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own history, so switching never costs you puzzles.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers every Christmas puzzle you've played here and the engine refuses to repeat one. Individual words will reappear across puzzles (there are only so many four-letter reindeer), usually wearing a different clue the next time.
Why isn't STOCKING (or REINDEER, or MISTLETOE) in the grid?
Length, not taste — they're eight and nine letters, and our themed grids top out at seven. Instead of leaving them out, we let them star in the clues: SOCK, DEER and HOLLY carry their share of the grid while their longer cousins do the hinting.
