Much more than a list of country names
A puzzle that only asked "Country. Country. Another country." would wear thin by the third grid, so our word list packs the whole suitcase. Yes, you'll meet the nations themselves, from tiny ANDORRA to eleven-time-zone RUSSIA — but also what flies over them (the MAPLE leaf, the LION on England's shield, the cedar on LEBANON's flag), what's for dinner (PAELLA, SAMOSA, a wobbly tower of SUSHI), what's in your wallet (YEN, EURO, RUPEE, the Korean WON), who you might meet (a DANE, a SCOT, a friendly KIWI), and the words that carry you between them all — VISA, CUSTOMS, one very full item of LUGGAGE. If it belongs in a well-stamped passport's story, it can land in the grid.
Around ninety real countries appear as answers, and dozens more star in the clues. By your tenth puzzle you'll have circled the planet a couple of times without leaving the kettle unattended.
Real names, chosen by the "heard of it" rule
Most puzzles on this site avoid proper nouns entirely — we like clues that never go stale. A countries crossword is the happy exception, because the names are the subject. So real places are welcome, under one firm rule: they must be countries and cities most solvers have simply heard of. FRANCE, BRAZIL, TOKYO — in. The obscure three-letter river port that exists only to rescue a stubborn corner — never. That's the oldest trick in lazy crossword-making, and we don't use it on any page of this site.
We're just as careful about staying friendly and evergreen. Clues stick to the things countries are loved for — food, flags, festivals, landmarks — and steer well clear of politics, borders in the news, and anything a headline could break. The pyramids are not going anywhere; neither are these clues.
Where are Australia and Switzerland?
Here's a quirk of the atlas: many of the most famous countries have names too grand for a small grid. Our engine builds with answers of three to seven letters — the size that interlocks snugly — and AUSTRALIA runs nine, ARGENTINA nine, SWITZERLAND a majestic eleven. The giants still make the trip, though: they appear in the clues, pointing at answers that do fit. Switzerland hands you the FRANC and the ALPS, Argentina teaches you the TANGO, Thailand sends a THAI curry, and New Zealand lends its HAKA, its RUGBY, and roughly all of its SHEEP. Think of it as the long names paying their way.
The sneaky-best way to learn your capitals
Flag quizzes and capital-city drills are the classic memory chores, and a crossword quietly beats both — because it checks your spelling while you recall. Everyone can point at Egypt; spelling CAIRO under pressure is another matter, and the crossing words confirm each letter as you go. Teachers use these for geography-unit revision, homeschool map weeks, and Model UN warm-ups; quiz-night regulars use them to sharpen the capitals round without flashcards. Why the grid looks a little different
Our themed grids weave more openly than a newspaper crossword — not every letter sits at a crossing. That's the honest cost of staying on topic: a dense grid needs thousands of words to choose from, and even the whole United Nations roster only supplies so many five-letter answers. Rather than pad the grid with off-topic filler, we use an open weave where every answer keeps its passport. There are still plenty of crossings to rescue you when QATAR won't come to mind.

Common questions
Which size should I pick?
The 5×5 is a quick city break — about six answers. The 7×7 fits the mid-size stars: BRAZIL, TURKEY, MEXICO. The 9×9 is the full grand tour, twenty-ish answers from CHAD to VIETNAM. Your choice is remembered, and each size keeps its own puzzle history, so switching never costs you a fresh grid.
Do I need to know every flag and capital?
Not at all. The clues are written easy on purpose, and the mix does the rest: for every capital there's a friendly everyday answer like TAXI or SCONE, and the crossings hand you letters for anything that stumps you. Solving around a gap isn't cheating — it's how you'll remember OSLO next time.
Why isn't my country in the puzzles?
Two innocent reasons. Its name may be longer than seven letters — see the Australia section above; it's probably starring in clues instead. Or it may sit past our "heard of it" bar for easy puzzles. If you think we've missed one that belongs, tell us — the word list genuinely grows on request.
Will I see the same puzzle twice?
No — your device remembers what you've played and the engine refuses to repeat a grid. Individual answers do return across puzzles (there's only one JAPAN), usually wearing a different clue or different crossings.
